According to their website, the ADF has represented “Citizens’ groups that are seeking to uphold their right to display Bible quotes, cartoons, and other religious symbols in public buildings.” Dicey Topics In mid-2011, the ADF responded to an item from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in which the SPLC accuses the ADF of “the modern version of religion and religious hate speech control”: [This] ADF has made such a big deal about the fact that it doesn’t engage in the mainstreaming of religion. [Our] work includes work against gay marriage, which is about affirming homosexual behavior. … It’s not about making religious statements.

[Our work] does not have a religious component or focus. [Our work] focuses on issues of concern to people of faith, rather than people of no faith. … ADF believes that laws against such statements [as these] … ‘should not prevent people from engaging in the peaceful expression of their views on religious and social issues.’ [T]he fact that you … use a Bible verse to argue for your position does not constitute hate speech, and the charge that ADF is engaging in this is absurd and absurdly offensive. [Our] work involves protecting the rights of people who do not share the values of the modern society to assert their views and try to persuade others to do so.

[Our work] protects the rights of citizens who are concerned about living in a religiously plural society in which they feel their religious freedoms are often under attack and they want to have a say in how they are governed. This work involves helping people who want to keep their jobs, schools that are religiously diverse, their marriages and other relationships from being legally pressured into changing. We don’t give people quotas to fill in our seminars to prove that we do this kind of work, but we do make a big deal about the fact that we do work that is entirely consistent with the interests of religious liberty, which is the central role that religious liberty plays in this country, and which this country is founded on.

Ethnic Injustice This section from the website “The Satanic Temple” attacks the Religious Right for its bigotry: So what is the Religious Right really about? It’s about power. There is little chance for advancement when you are viewed as a threat to this power. The Religious Right indoctrinates the public with the idea that it is alright to spew hate, bigotry and prejudice toward a perceived enemy. It is these people who have sown the seeds of animosity against Muslims. [H]ate crimes are used as a tool to drive out the religious minority and the values they hold dear, all in the name of Christianity. This is nothing but an attempt to legitimate the Religious Right’s fear mongering.

[T]he Religious Right is not concerned with teaching Americans about a diverse array of religious beliefs. It is concerned with keeping Americans convinced that Christianity is the only way to live and that God exists. If we are successful in dismantling this fear-mongering rhetoric and replacing it with true religious diversity and pluralism, we can begin to dismantle the cause of these outrages, and we will be on our way to a country free from systemic racism, ageism, ableism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and Islamophobia. Misleading the Public This ADF site tells the public what ADF told the Church of England in a letter: [The letter] tells us that ADF is not a hate group or an anti-gay organization, which we are not. … It seems as though the writer on this letter was naive. ADF’s blog states, “ADF exists to defend religious liberty and to affirm the sanctity of human life and the dignity of marriage.”
